Green seasonCalving season begins
The herds gather on the southern Serengeti and Ndutu plains as calving season begins. Expect warm days, fresh green scenery, occasional short showers and fewer vehicles than in the peak months.
Green seasonPeak calving
Thousands of calves are born on the southern plains, and predators are never far away. Mornings are bright and warm, with the odd afternoon shower.
RainsThe long rains begin
The long rains arrive, turning the landscape lush and bringing heavy showers, usually in the afternoon. Parks are quiet and low-season rates are attractive, though some roads can be slow.
RainsWettest month
April is the wettest month of the year. Some camps close and travel needs flexibility, but those who visit enjoy dramatic skies, empty parks and the lowest prices.
RainsThe rains ease
Rainfall eases through the month and the countryside is at its greenest. The herds begin to move north and west, and many lodges reopen at low-season rates.
Dry seasonThe dry season begins
Skies clear, days are cooler and the grass begins to dry out, making wildlife easier to spot. The herds are often in the Western Corridor, and elephant numbers build in Tarangire.
Dry seasonPeak safari season
This is one of the best months for game viewing. Dry weather, short grass and concentrated wildlife make sightings reliable, and the herds start to approach the northern Serengeti.
Dry seasonRiver-crossing season
The herds are often in the northern Serengeti, where the Mara River crossings can take place. Days are dry and sunny, so book early because this is a very popular month.
Dry seasonDry days, big herds
Conditions stay dry and warm, and the northern Serengeti and Tarangire are at their best. Crowds begin to thin by the end of the month.
Dry seasonThe dry season winds down
The dry season ends and the first short showers may appear towards the end of the month. The herds begin to turn south again, and parks are quieter than in August.
Green seasonThe short rains arrive
Short rains refresh the plains and the herds head back to the south. Showers are usually brief, the scenery turns green and rates are lower.
Green seasonFestive season
Warm weather and green plains make December a lovely time to combine a safari with the coast. The southern Serengeti fills with herds ahead of the calving season, and holiday dates book early.
